1:1 at SSC
Shenandoah School Corporation was a recipient of the 2017 Innovation Planning Grant, which was intended to research options into advancing our 1:1 technology initiatives. After careful planning and research, SSC implemented a plan in the Fall of 2018. This allowed our students to have a school provided device assigned to them, which could be transported to and from school.
Devices are paid for through Textbook fees - over time, we are working to eliminate the purchase of new textbooks, which will allow for new devices to be purchased and old ones to be replaced.
Why School Issued Devices?
Student Safety - The usage of the device is monitored through content-filters.
Repairs - The school or insurance provider can repair all devices.
Updates - The school can update software as needed.
Familiarity - Teachers and students are familiar with all devices.
Testing - All standardized testing is done online. The state requires devices to meet certain specifications and to be monitored by the school.
After investigating optional insurance agreements, we found that it was more cost effective to parents in the long run to mandate insurance coverage. This allows the Corporation to utilize a local company to have student devices repaired and returned to the student fairly quickly. Parents may want to look into adding the device to their homeowners policy, if additional coverage is desired.
