Elementary students help with Haiti reliefFebruary 4, 2010 by Sarah  Students from Shenandoah Elementary School presented The Salvation Army with over $5,600 in donations. In a weeks time, students at the Shenandoah Elementary School in Middletown, Indiana raised over $5,600 for The Salvation Army's Disaster Services Relief for Haiti through their fundraising campaign Drinking Water for Haiti. At noon Feb. 3, 2010 at Shenandoah Elementary, the students presented the funds to The Salvation Army's Major Brenda Pittman and Development Director Jeff Stanger. Drinking Water for Haiti was put into affect by every teacher in the school buying enough water bottles for each student in their class. The students were allowed to drink the water in school and were reminded when they drank that the people in Haiti didn't have this luxury. The students took their empty water bottles home to be filled with spare change and cash, then returned with the water bottles to school. The result was a generous donation to The Salvation Army, who takes 100 percent of their raised funds to be added directly to the relief effort. Amber Kinsey's fourth grade class raised the most, a grand total of $387. "We were just floored," said Kinsey about the amount they had raised. Another fourth grade teacher Laurie Boykin headed the fundraiser. She's been to Haiti before on mission trips and really felt compelled to help after the earthquake. She never thought that the fundraiser would be so successful. "We were hoping to get $1,000," said Boykin. Thanks to the teachers and students at Shenandoah Elementary, and a special thanks to First Merchants Bank who it took three hours to count out all the change, Haiti will be receiving much more needed assistance. Shenandoah Elementary has been active with The Salvation Army's causes before, by ringing bells and adopting families during the Christmas season. HomePlus allows access to classroom grades, attendance and discipline records for every child in the Shenandoah School Corporation, enabling parents and students to monitor academic progress on a daily basis, improve communication between school and home and allow quick access to every student's progress or needs. Shenandoah School Corporation will conduct DIRECT CERTIFICATION in July for those households who recieve Food Stamps or TANF benefits. Those households, directly certified for free meals and free textbooks will be notified by mail and WILL NOT need to complete an application this school year. If you receive the Food Stamp or TANF benefits, but did not receive a direct certification letter in July please, submit an application to the school. | ||

FREE/REDUCED MEAL AND TEXTBOOK INFORMATION Please apply today!
The National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program, NSLP/SBP, is a federal program which assists our families AND our schools. Your family may qualify for free or reduced benefits for lunch, breakfast and/or textbooks while the school is eligible to receive additional program dollars based on the percentages calculated for qualifying households. We ask that each household complete an application EVEN IF A QUALIFYING HOUSEHOLD NOTIFIES THE SCHOOL THAT IS CHOOSES TO DECLINE BENEFITS.
Each year at the beginning of school, Shenandoah School Corporation must distribute letters to all households of children attending our schools. This letter tells families which school nutrition programs are available and that meals may be free or at a reduced price, or that milk may be available for free. Our corporation makes the letter and application available on our school website in a downloadable form or your may pick up the application and letter of instruction up at your child's school.
Please make sure to fill in only one form (application) per household, even if the children are in different schools. You must mark the textbook section to be eligible for textbook reductions and sign the form in the textbook section. Free or reduced textbook eligibility will substantially reduce your textbook cost. You may still be required to pay some materials fees. Answers to questions are on the Free/Reduced Meal and Textbook Application.
